A double minded man is unstable in all his ways. [For being as he is] a man of two minds (hesitating, dubious, irresolute), [he is] unstable and unreliable and uncertain about everything [he thinks, feels, decides].
Do we really know how much we could achieve if we could just have our minds settled? I should probably stop writing already, and let us think on that for a week or so, or maybe not. You know, if we could just focus for a minute, if we could just get decided on what is it that we are going to pursue, if we could just hold those conversations that we should have held long ago with ourselves, we could achieve so much more. Honestly, before running to every Tom, Dick and Harry, we’ve got to get our minds straight. I’ve kept asking and wondering, why are we always too busy to just sit, think and decide?
Double mindedness is a state of wavering between ideas, instability in our thoughts, indecisiveness. A double minded person is one who is divided in his interests or loyalties, wavering, uncertain, two-faced, half-hearted. But for how long will we waver between ideas? For how long will we walk around confused? For how long will we lack clarity in life? For how long will we keep making the same wrong choices over and over again? How much longer are we going to find a false sense of comfort in instability? Count the cost. Consider the implications and all the negative consequences. You know what you need to work on, so, set your mind straight.
The state of our minds determines our thoughts, then our emotions, then undisputedly our actions. Dumb minds, dumb actions. Smart minds, smart actions. Simple maths, right? We all know that our actions define us to a great extent. So, can we be a bit more intentional? Good deeds make us attractive, give us a good reputation. Bad deeds, need I mention? All this stems from the mind. Thoughts hence emotions hence actions. This is why we ought to be conscious of the state of our minds? Tonight, as you lay in bed, decide to get your mind straight. Think, what is it that you stand for?
We all know the story of the 3 Hebrew men, who never burnt in the fiery furnace. How the king ordered that everyone bow and worship the statute he had made. Failure to do so, you’d be thrown into a blazing furnace. Real talk, what would you have done? I know this would be a catch 22 for majority. No one plays with fire. But hey, the 3 men did not need one more chance to change their minds and bow. They did not need to defend themselves before the king. Like, it is what it is, and we hope that this is clear enough for you that “hey king, we ain’t gonna bow”. Their minds were set.
The furnace even got heated 7 times hotter, and the king ordered the strongest men to throw the three men into the fire. Still, none of them considered changing their mind an option. Can we be that firm with our decisions? This is what makes up our character. What I loved about these 3 Hebrew men, was how they stood their ground. They had their minds set. They did not waver between ideas, not even for a second, despite being given the chance, despite the thought of roasting in that furnace. When I talk about getting your mind straight, I mean this kind of straight and fixated.
If you stand for nothing, you fall for anything. Be sure, a double minded man will more often than not make the wrong choices. Show me one with character flaws and in most cases you’ll note down an element of double mindedness. A double minded man lacks stability. He wants this today, wants that tomorrow. He stagnates in the long run. He will always be confused. Wavering between right and wrong. He will waste so much time doing unnecessary things in life. He will compromise his values regardless of the negative consequences. Eventually……you can fill in that blank.
But there’s just something about people who have their minds straight. Focused. You can trace order in all their dealings. They’re always so in touch with themselves, self-awareness! You can hardly trace any kind of mess in their lives. They know what they want, when they want it and how they’ll get it. Thing is, when your mind is in order, your life will be in order. Since nothing good comes easy, let’s put in the work required, and chase after the good!
You’ll need to hold firm to your decisions. To maintain a good character, you’ll have to hold your firm opinions and choices even if it means getting into that blazing furnace. And guess what, you can go through the fire and not even a hair on your head will get burnt. You can go through the fire, and not smell of smoke.
Sometimes you’re thrown under the bus. It could be stress, betrayal, anger, pain name it. And that is bound to alter our peace of mind. That’s when all hell breaks loose and people start acting crazy. Stay alert, such times are bound to occur, but you can still get through it all with your mind steady. Train your mind to work for you. Train it to focus. It brings clarity and a sense of direction. Decide on your immovable state of mind.
Finally, if I was to point you to any direction, this would be it, set your mind on things above!!!! That’s my favorite state!
